There are several uses for the nutritional label on the back of food packages. One reason might be to aid somebody with their weight loss or to maintain their current weight. Some people find it hard to understand the nutrition label. Here are a few key things to look for.
The nutrition label contains certain facts about various nutrients in the food. There are several different sections to pay attention to, including serving size, number of calories per serving, amounts of certain nutrients, and amounts of certain vitamins.
Serving Size
The first thing you should look at on a nutrition label is the serving size. This section tells you how many calories are in one serving. It will also tell you how many servings are in the entire package. For example, on the back of a package of chips it will tell you that the number of chips per serving is 10 and that the entire package has a total of eight servings. This way somebody can tell how much their eating just by looking at the back of the package.
Calories
The second thing you should look at on the nutrition label is the amount of calories per serving. On the left hand side it will tell you the amount of calories, and on the right side it will tell you how many calories come from fat.
Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium
Another main thing you should look at on the nutrition facts label is the amount of fat, cholesterol, and sodium that are in the food. The fat content includes total fat, saturated fat, and trans fat. On the right side of this is the percent daily value which is normally set for the 2000 calorie diet. You’ll want the amount of fat to be relatively low. A person should get a maximum of 65 g of total fat per day, and a maximum of 25 g of saturated fat everyday. Also in this section if you’ll see the amount of total carbohydrates and protein. Carbohydrates include dietary fiber and sugars.
Vitamins
And lastly you’ll want to look at the amount of vitamins and other minerals. These include vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron. These minerals are essential to one’s diet in order to stay healthy. Many people do not get enough calcium or a iron, thus it is important to keep track of how much of these nutrients you’re receiving.
